Designing Years of Service Challenge Coins for Your Team
Custom challenge coins, no matter who uses them, are an excellent tool for team building and celebrating company culture. Employee appreciation coins come in many forms. We’ve created service anniversary coins, milestone achievement coins, and several other types of corporate coins that reward employees. However, years of service challenge coins are by far the most popular.
Most companies order a series of coins that are individually designed to recognize team members who reach a full year of service, five years of service, and all the way through fifty years of service!
Creating artwork for challenge coins is completely free, so don’t fret if you know that you’ll need several different designs for your years of service coins. We even have a few tricks that can save you money when you order a series of coins for your employee service award programs.

How to Save Money on Your Order of Employee Appreciation Coins
Like we said before, the best way to get started on your own years of service coin design is to fill out a free quote form and let us know what type of design you're looking for. Our art team will create a free challenge coin design for you, and you can make as many changes to the design as you need to get the artwork just right.
More often than not, the customers who order years of service challenge coins need several different designs all at once. Ordering multiple challenge coin designs can get expensive, but we have a great way to help you save money on an order of employee appreciation coins like these.
These years of service coins are all apart of the same series, meaning that they all share a common side. So, while one side of the coins indicate the length of service, the other side is the same as the rest of the coins.
This gives the coins a consistent appearance, but it also saves you a lot of money! For every challenge coin, there is a mold fee for each side of the coin because our production team needs to create a unique mold for each side.
If we look at the Texas A&M coins pictured above, there are seven different coins in the series. Normally, an order of seven different coins calls for 21 different coin molds. However, since they all share a common side, we only had to make a total of eight coin molds, saving time in production and saving the customer the cost of making so many different coin molds.
For a more detailed breakdown of pricing, check out our challenge coin pricing page. The size of your coins and the number of coins you need will give you a rough estimate, but for the most accurate pricing quote on your specific coin design, reach out to our sales team at info@signaturecoins.com, and they will create a free pricing quote for you.
We make creating custom challenge coins easy!
But we would prefer you hear it directly from other customers 😉
Custom Coin Design Options For Years of Service Coins
Some of the most important things to think about when you’re designing a challenge coin are size, shape and metal plating. The metal plating of your coins will serve as the base of your design.
A lot of recognition programs that use challenge coins to celebrate work anniversaries create gold coins for their top tier performers or for the employees that have been with the company the longest time. For example, a 10-year anniversary coin would have gold plating, and a five-year anniversary coin would have silver plating.
We have more than just gold and silver plating. You can create copper coins, black metal coins and even rainbow metal coins if you want to make something that stands out from the crowd.
When it comes to size and shape, we can design just about anything you can imagine. The largest coin we ever designed was 9” in diameter and weighed over three pounds, but the average size of challenge coins is 1.75”.
A majority of the years of service coins and employee recognition coins we help design are between 1.75” and 2”.
Something else to keep in mind as you design your coins is color. We use Pantone colors for all of our challenge coins designs. If your company has a style guide of a list of brand colors, let us know when you fill out your free quote form, and our art team will use the same Pantone colors for your coins.
This way, the coins will match all of the promotional materials created for your company. Most challenge coins use soft enamel, but we also have translucent enamel, glitter enamel, and several other types of enamel paint if you want to shake things up.
