The History of West Point

During the Revolutionary War, George Washington believed West Point to be the most strategic and important location for military operations and subsequently moved his headquarters there in 1779. The fort at West Point was fortified and defended by troops and the British were never able to capture it. After the war, America quickly learned that there was a need to provide an academy that would educate young cadets in war and shape them into United States Military Officers. President Thomas Jefferson signed the legislation establishing the West Point Military Academy in 1802 and since then the school has proven itself capable of molding capable and historic officers and leaders throughout the United States.

Graduates of West Point represented the military leadership of both the Confederate and Union Armies during the Civil War and include many of the heroes of both World War I & II. Alumni of West Point have found fame in the military, as astronauts, and as political leaders throughout history. Some of the notable alumni from the academy include:

  • Ulysses S. Grant
  • Dwight D. Eisenhower
  • Henry Ossian Flipper
  • Robert E. Lee
  • George Armstrong Custer
  • Douglas MacArthur
  • George Patton
  • Buzz Aldrin
  • John J. Pershing

Every cadet that walks the halls of West Point is joining the ranks of some of the most influential military and political leaders in all of the United State’s history. It is a very select group and cadets should be honored for their accomplishment and acceptance within the school. West Point Academy challenge coins are a personal and meaningful gift to bestow on a class of cadets as they embark on a journey to become the best that they can be and serve as highly trained officers in the United States Army!

West Point Athletics
A Core Tradition

The importance of physical fitness cannot be understated when it comes to the United States Military Academy. Students are required to participate in athletics at the varsity, club, or company level while in attendance at the school and physical fitness courses are taken all four years. Grades in physical fitness classes are counted into a cadet’s grade point average unlike most every other school in the country, emphasizing the value on athletics and physical ability the West Point holds at its core.

On top of sports and physical fitness, West Point cadets spend their summers going through basic training learning the key skills any member of the Army needs to possess including close quarters combat, land navigation, marksmanship, and unit leadership.

The football team at West Point has a friendly rivalry with the Naval Academy Football Team at Annapolis. Since the earliest days of the two school, both teams have competed fiercely with each other for dominance in the historic series. The first game between the two schools took place in 1890 at West Point. The Navy team had many years more practice and ended up defeating the West Point Army team 24-0. Eager to redeem themselves, the Army team trained constantly and were granted the privilege of an away game. Cadets traditionally are not allowed to leave the West Point campus at all, so traveling to Maryland was an unprecedented break from the norm.

West Point defeated their rival Navy team at Annapolis 32-16 in their second match up. The competitive spirit between the two teams still goes on to this day, and both the Naval Academy and the Military Academy train hard and put forth some of the best teams in the NCAA.

West Point Academy challenge coins personify the competitive spirit that thrives throughout the school. The Corps of Cadets is a student body of driven and determined athletes that train for perfection and never accept failure.
