The Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) might have gotten its official start after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, but the heroic actions of marines engaged in “irregular warfare” has a history dating back to the 1800s. The U.S. Marines have long been one of the toughest branches of the military. MARSOC soldiers are marines held to an even higher standard and subjected to even more rigorous training. These Marines are deployed into some of the toughest and most hostile situations imaginable, and they comport themselves with the utmost bravery and skill. Marine Corps challenge coins are the perfect way to honor their bravery and hard work.

Since 2000, men and women from every branch of the U.S. military have turned to Signature Coins for their custom challenge coins. We’ve been honored to create coins marking the occasions of soldiers completing boot camp, birthday balls, promotion to the rank of Chief Petty Officer and so many more. When customers choose Signature Coins for their custom challenge coins, they not only get challenge coins of unmatched quality, they also strike up a partnership that will last a lifetime. Because customers who partner with us never need another company for the creation of their custom promotional materials again.

What are Marine Corps Special Operations Challenge Coins?

In WWI, a rich lieutenant had special unit coins created for the men in his unit. The coins we designed to create a close bond between the men carrying them by signifying their unique belonging to this group. As legend has it, when one of the pilots in this unit was shot down behind enemy lines and captured,  he was stripped of all personal identification. All he had left was his unit coin.

The soldier was lucky enough to escape captivity, but he was alone in hostile territory and didn’t have an easy way to get back to his unit. When he was found by allies, it was impossible for him to prove his identity without any papers to back up his claims. When he presented his unit challenge coin, however, the allies were able to get him back to his unit safely. Since then, all branches of the U.S. military have made use of challenge coins and ensure their soldiers carry the coins at all times.

Marine Corps challenge coins serve to signify a soldier’s belonging to the most elite units in the strongest military in the world. MARSOC units are some of the most specially trained individuals in the armed forces. Their challenge coins deserve to be as special as their training and unique abilities.

Specialty MARSOC units include:

  • The Marine Raider Regiment
  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd Marine Raider Battalions
  • The Marine Raider Support Group
  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd Marine Raider Support Battalions
  • Marine Raider Training Center

Make Sure Your Marine Corps Challenge Coins Stand Out

According to the Marine website, 959 MARSOC Marines and Sailors have been awarded decorations for valor since the Command was initiated in 2006. These soldiers have earned their special place at the top through their hard work and unparalleled training, and they deserve a coin that’s every bit as customized as they are.

Signature Coins offers a long list of customization options that will help set your custom Marine Corps Special Operations challenge coins apart. Among those options is a list of different plating choices:

  • Antique Gold-- This is the most popular plating style for custom challenge coins. The recessed areas will have a slightly darker finish when compared to the raised areas. Antique plating helps to show text in higher relief, and shows less wear and tear over time.
  • High Polish Gold-- The classiest and most expensive looking plating option, high polish gold coins will have the same high polish finish on both the raised and recessed areas of the coin.
  • Antique Silver-- With a lot of the same benefits as the antique gold option, antique silver plating looks very similar to antique pewter, giving your coin a sense of age.
  • High Polish Silver-- Another one of the more popular options, each high polish silver coin is hand dipped in real silver plating and then polished to a very high polished shine.
  • Copper-- Copper can be a great, unique way to make your challenge coin stand out from the rest. Both raised and recessed areas have the same level of high polish finish.
  • Black Metal-- There’s an automatic strength and distinctness to black metal coins. Since the color of most coins have a metallic look to it, black metal really stands apart and increases the color contrasts almost by default.
  • Antique Nickel-- Fairly new to the plating game, antique nickel plating looks very similar to a gunmetal which gives the coin a very durable look.
  • Black Nickel-- Where the finish of a black metal coin can look smooth and uniform, black nickel offers an interesting matte finish contrast.
