The Slash
The red stripe, or “slash”, painted on the side of each Coast Guard vessel has become a synonymous symbol of the service. Sometimes described as a racing stripe, the red slash originally came about in the 1960s when President Kennedy approved a design proposal whose aim was to improve the overall visual identity of the United States government and its branches.
The original red stripe design is centered at 64 degrees and is accompanied by a thin blue strip on the inside line. The new emblem was designed to sit in the center of the red strip as well. This simple design has continued since and to many represents a feeling of relief, safety, and protection! In short, all of the core values of the Coast Guard.
The Importance of the Coast Guard Reserve
Members of the Coast Guard Reserve have risen to the aid of our nation in the most trying of times. Reservists are usually recalled for large-scale disasters caused by hurricanes and flooding, as well as for military purposes. The Coast Guard Reserve was heavily involved in relief efforts after Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Katrina as well as in military operations such as operation desert storm and desert shield.
A prime example of the Coast Guard Reserve’s ability to mobilize and rise to the need of our country came after the attack on 9/11. Up to 1,100 reservists were on duty and aiding in relief and the protection of our shores within just three days.
