What's the difference between a years-of-service coin and a retirement coin?

Years of service coins mark the milestones along the way — 5, 10, 20 years — and usually belong to a tiered series an employee collects over a career. A retirement coin is the capstone: a single, often premium design honoring the whole career at its close. Many organizations design both as one family, so the retirement coin reads as the final coin in the series.
