What does it mean when a firefighter gives you a challenge coin?

It’s a mark of respect. Firefighters carry coins bearing their department, station, or academy class, and handing one to someone — a mentor, a retiring colleague, a civilian who helped — says that person is part of the house’s story. The tradition came from the military and runs deep in the fire service, which is why departments guard their coin designs so carefully.
