South Carolina Challenge Coins

Continuing the United States Challenge Coin Tradition

south-carolina-collage

South Carolina, as one of the original 13 colonies forming America, holds a special regard for history and tradition. The name, Carolina, comes from King Charles I of England when he gave the land to Sir Robert Heath. Originally, the territory was named Carolus, a name derived from the Latin version of Charles. King Charles II later changed the name to Carolina in 1663.

In the state seal, state flag, and even the state nickname (the Palmetto State), an image of a palmetto tree is always present. Not only are these specific trees found throughout the state, but they also played a major role in state history. On Sullivan's Island, Fort Moultrie was constructed using palmetto logs that ended up absorbing the impact of devastating English cannon fire during the Revolutionary War. The defensive efforts of Fort Moultrie are historic and played a huge role in the colonial war effort.

Other important symbols of South Carolina include the state sword used to represent the Senate, and the Mace of the House of Representatives. The original sword used in the Carolina Senate is believed to have been stolen in the 1940s, however, a replacement was gifted by Lord Halifax in 1951 and is still in use today. The Mace of the House of Representatives is the oldest legislative mace in use within the United States. Traditionally, a mace is an emblem of authority within a House of Representatives.

South Carolina challenge coins continue the traditional heritage of symbolism within the state by including custom artwork of these incredible state symbols and bearing the motto of South Carolina: “Dum Spiro Spero" meaning While I Breathe I Hope. Values such as love, loyalty, and faith are personified by each South Carolina challenge coin. They are carried with a powerful sense of unity within the state and displayed with honor.

Signature Coins creates unique and compelling designs for United States challenge coins and delivers them as pieces of state or organization history. They represent the amazing histories of police departments, fire department, military bases, sports teams, schools, and businesses all over the Nation.
