First On Scene When Disaster Strikes

The entire state of California is prone to wildfire and rest along the bands of the San Andreas fault, meaning that the potential for earthquakes is perpetually growing under sidewalks and buildings all over San Diego. First responders and firefighter are constantly prepared to combat any disaster scenario that California can throw at them. They train constantly and dedicate themselves to become the pinnacle of excellence in service and experience.

The Cedar fire in 2003 is a prime example of the exemplary service and tremendous efforts of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The blaze was started when a lost hunter tried to build a signal fire. On October 25th around 5:30 PM the spreading fire was reported to cover 20 acres. A mere six hours later, 5,500 acres were up in flames. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department fought remarkably and tirelessly to contain the blaze, along with departments from all over the state. In total, the San Diego deployed 50 engine companies, 9 truck companies, and 2 airport firefighter rigs.

The wildfire was announced to be contained three days later. In San Diego alone, more than 28,000 acres of land were burned and 335 structure were destroyed with many more damaged. In total, the Cedar fire decimated over 280,000 acres of land, 2,820 buildings, and claimed the lives of 15 people.

Without the tireless efforts of the firefighters, working non-stop for three days, it is impossible to say how much more could have been destroyed by the fire that is now considered one of the most devastating in the history of California. What can be determined is that those brave men and women fighting to protect the lives, property, and environment of the state are indispensable. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department challenge coins distinguish the courageous men and women who put their lives on the life to protect the people of our Nation.
