A challenge coin is a uniquely designed coin or token bearing a military branch or unit’s specific emblems, slogans, or symbols. Also called unit coins and commander coins, challenge coins are an important part of one of our military’s oldest traditions. Servicemembers receive a challenge coin from their commander upon reaching an important milestone in their career or in recognition of exceptional service. For example, a Marine Corps Forces Reserve challenge coin with the official Marine Corps seal and the motto, “Augment. Reinforce. Support.” may be given to marines upon successful completion of their training. Officers may also have uniquely designed coins created for every member of their unit as a symbol of solidarity and bonding.
