Georgia Challenge Coins

As one of the original 13 colonies, Georgia’s community and cultures are arguably older than the United States with Georgia’s capital changing hands no less than four times over the course of its history from Savannah, Augusta, Louisville, Milledgeville, and now Atlanta. The first capital and seat of government in Georgia was the City of Savannah, which was used by the revolutionary government to run the colony during the Revolutionary War until it was briefly captured by the British. Since then the seat of government has changed hands multiple times either due to reasons related to convenience, war, and reasons unknown. 

The many cities and towns that dot Georgia’s landscape each carry strong cultural and community ties both due to Georgia’s status as one of the original 13 colonies and also as one of the bastions of the Confederacy during the Civil War. The state is separated into 9 different regions exploring different regions of the state including mountainous terrain to the north, a massive metropolitan area around the city’s capital of Atlanta, and a wide eastern coast. Under each of these regions are dozens of unique cities and communities with unique character and cultures molded by their home terrain. 

Some of the major cities in Georgia include:

• Atlanta - The capital of Georgia and the state’s primary economic business and cultural center of the state.
• Savannah - The original capital of the state and the oldest city in the state, first established by the British government before the Revolutionary War.
• Augusta - Host city of The Masters professional golf tournament held annually. Also formerly a state capital and a key location during the Civil War.
• Macon - One of the few cities that remained untouched during the Civil War and as a result hosts some of the oldest and original Greek and Victorian-style Southern architecture.
