San Francisco Police Department Challenge Coins
Celebrate Your State Police Officers with Custom Challenge Coins
Before people knew about the gold in them there hills, San Francisco, California was a small and quiet western town. But with the American Gold Rush starting in 1848, thousands of people from throughout the country flooded into the city looking to strike it rich. The influx of new citizens quickly exposed the city’s lack of a police force as lawlessness became the norm amongst the prospecting citizens. The first police officers were selected in 1849 and quickly began the department’s long history of excellent service. Through earthquakes, war protests, hippies and the summer of love, the SFPD has served the Bay Area with distinction and set an impressive example for law enforcement agencies across the nation. The brave men and women of the San Francisco Police Department deserve to have their work recognized with police challenge coins.

From Disaster to Distinction
The early days of the SFPD might not have been the most shining moments in the department’s history. Understaffed and left to control a city being pulled apart by anti-Chinese sentiment towards the increasing minority population, the officers were shown to be unprepared to deal with the Great Riot of July 1877.
The police force grew in response to these early struggles. They would be tested again with the 1906 earthquake and fires. From this trying ordeal, the unique ingenuity of the SFPD would shine. In an effort to protect the city records from the encroaching fire, officers poured beer onto the canvas covering the files. Partnering with military personnel from nearby Presidio, Angel Island and Fort Baker also set the tone for the joint operations during emergencies that would come.
These early disasters marked the San Francisco Police Department as a group of adaptable individuals who quickly learned from their experiences and allowed those lessons to lead them into a bright future. In the wake of the 1906 earthquake, the department grew impressively. In as little as six years, multiple new stations had been built across the devastated city.
The building of new stations wasn’t the only innovation for the SFPD following the quake. In subsequent years, San Francisco Police Departments became the first in the nation to identify criminals via fingerprinting, to create motorcycle units in an attempt to put an end to speeding, to implement a modern record keeping system, and one of the first police departments in the nation to hire women officers.
With such a long and impressive history, it’s easy to see why SFPD officers have so much pride in their department. The virtues of ingenuity and acceptance continue to sustain the men and women of the SFPD to this day as they offer their services during the largest LGBTQ pride parade in the country, allow their diverse citizens to exercise their voice in massive protests, and go above and beyond to protect the people of the Bay Area every day. The instances of distinctions deserving San Francisco Police Department challenge coins are plentiful in The Golden City!
