Red Horse Challenge Coins

Each Red Horse Squadron, typically consisting of several hundred members, maintains a high-trained mobile unit of engineers and construction professionals who deploy onto battlefields and war zones as self-sufficient units of experts using local terrain and materials to lay the groundwork for difficult projects. 
Red Horse engineers perform a variety of different roles including: cradle-to-grave engineering, aircraft launch systems, bed-down operations, expedient facility construction, heavy equipment, water well drilling, concrete and asphalt batch plant, quarry, explosive demolition, air assault, supply, logistics, food services, medical, administration, training, contracting and comptroller operations.

Servicemembers in Red Horse Squadrons are all fully-trained soldiers with knowledge of both engineering and field duty operations. Additionally, Red Horse Squadrons have entered hostile territory alongside both U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force personnel during the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, the War on Terror, and ongoing conflicts located worldwide. Squadrons may include an Airborne Red Horse Team made up of volunteers who undergo specialized paratrooper training to drop into hot zones and provide immediate support and engineering expertise.

Currently operational Red Horse Squadrons include:
The 554th Red Horse Squadron, located at Anderson Air Force Base, is the oldest operating Red Horse Squadron in the U.S. Air Force with the unit motto, “Semper Ducimus,” “Always Leading.”
The 819th Red Horse Squadron, based at Malmstrom Air Force Base, this unit is sent worldwide on both wartime operations and humanitarian aid to crises zones.
The 820th Red Horse Squadron, based at Nellis Air Force Base, consisting of 404 specialized engineers and experts who provide engineering training for 15 different Active, Guard, and Reserve Units.
The 823rd Red Horse Squadron, based at Hurlburt Field, with the unit motto, “Can do. Will do.” have deployed in Bosnia, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait to build crucial infrastructure and facilities from the group up.
