Ceramic Poker Chips, Not Clay

Every chip we make is ceramic. The artwork is dye sublimated into a blank chip under heat, so the color becomes part of the surface rather than a label sitting on top of it. That is the whole difference in practice: there is no sticker or inlay to peel at the edge, no ring where a printed disc meets the body of the chip, and no wear line after a season of shuffling.

Printing rather than striking also changes what the art can be. A design goes edge to edge across the full face — photographs, gradients, small type, a unit crest with fine linework — at a level of detail no metal die can hold. The edge spots are part of that same artwork, so their color and pattern are yours to choose instead of being fixed by the blank.

Sizes, Colors, and Numbering

Chips come in three diameters. 1.55" is the standard casino size and what most home and tournament sets use. 1.75" and 2" give the artwork more room, which matters when a chip has to carry a full logo, a crest, or a block of text.

You cannot talk about poker chips without talking about color. The conventional denomination map runs:

• White — 1
• Red — 5
• Blue — 10
• Green — 25
• Black — 100
• Purple — 500

Those values shift by region and by game, so use whatever scheme suits you. We match color with PMS (Pantone Matching System), the same way you’d match paint at a hardware store — everything is numbered, so there is no guessing how a color will look in person.

Gambling did not start with poker chips, but by the 1800s they had become the standard. In the saloons and gaming houses of the American West, the first chips were made from clay, bone, and ivory — and it quickly became obvious that money placeholders that easy to copy were a problem. Counterfeit chips grew serious enough that saloons and gaming houses started standardizing their chips and ordering them wholesale.

Those early manufactured clay chips were custom designed and, like real currency, deliberately hard to copy. The customers who ordered them liked adding their own flair to a set — a tradition we’re happy to continue.
