The first volunteer fire department in Orlando was established in 1883. A hat and dressmaking shop owned by a Mrs. Basset went up in flames, and two men jumped into the inferno to rescue the shop owners daughter. This event inspired William Sherman to organize a group of volunteers to work in a fire department. He became the first Orlando Fire Chief and commanded 6 members with nothing more than a hose, bucket brigade, and painter’s ladder.
In 1898 the department purchases their first fire engine, and in 1915 the department was able to replace horse-drawn carriages with motorized fire trucks. The Orlando Fire Department was tested by events like:
- Burden’s Arcade Hotel Building Fire of 1903
- Southern Methodist Academy Fire of 1905
- Lockart Lumber Mill Fire of 1906
- Avalon Hotel Fire of 1955
Over the years the department grew with the expansion of the city. The instruction of the Paramedic Program, the Arson/Bomb Squad, and Emergency Neighborhood Training Programs all bolstered the department’s ability to help the community and tackle any disaster that may come.
