Mississippi Challenge Coins

Named after the famous Mississippi River which helped chart the early course of U.S. colonial development, the State of Mississippi was the 20th state to enter the Union and is steeped in the culture and heritage of the Deep South. Much of Mississippi is crisscrossed by lakes, rivers, creeks, and other natural bodies of water that empty into the Gulf of Mexico to the south. Meanwhile, the state’s landscape is dotted with rural communities and towns who maintain a Deep Southern culture and heritage marking back to some of the most significant developments in U.S. history including the rise of “King Cotton” and the conflict of the Civil War.

Mississippi challenge coins are commissioned throughout the state to honor members of the military, recognize selfless law enforcement officers, and to reward outstanding performers in major businesses. Organizations throughout the country commission challenge coins to represent their organization, often incorporating symbols and elements of their home state to represent the local pride and history of their membership. Some Mississippi state symbols that may be used include the state motto, “  Virtute et armis or By Valor and Arms,” the state flag, or even a view of the state capital.

Our company, Signature Coins, offers professional challenge coin design and production services to government and professional organizations throughout the country. Mississippi Culture and History

In early American history, the Mississippi territories were among the first lands acquired by the early United States. The waterways and rivers which crisscrossed the state made it an effective hub of agricultural development. Most communities built within the early development of the state were populated along the rivers and waterways where easy access to shipping was available. Mississippi benefited greatly from the early cotton boom of the 1800s, which led to a large slave population and slave owners who maintained cotton plantations throughout the state.

With its economic success tied to its plantations and enslaved workforce, Mississippi was one of the founding members of the Confederacy, an aspect of its heritage it continues to pay homage to in its modern symbols including the state flag which incorporates the Confederate flag into its overall design. Following the Civil War, Mississippi would go on to make its mark on U.S. history as the birthplace of blues music, based off the work chants of the state’s large population of former slaves. The region of Mississippi known as the “Mississippi Delta” is considered the birthplace and incubator of blues music with notable early artists including Charlie Patton, Robert L. Johnson, and later, “King of Rock and Roll” Elvis Presley himself.
