What Are Fort Bragg Challenge Coins?
The exchange of challenge coins between members of the military is one of the oldest traditions among members in the military in every branch of the armed forces. At Fort Bragg, servicemembers are awarded challenge coins in recognition of exceptional service, passing a major milestone in their careers such as boot camp or jump school, or as a unit coin given to all of a unit’s members as proof of membership and solidarity. Officers may also commission a set of “commander coins” to be awarded to specific servicemembers or individuals who have earned their personal regard in the completion of their duties.
The servicemembers posted at Fort Bragg quickly gain a large collection of challenge coins as they are called upon to respond to natural disasters, defend the country, or protect our allies. Operations these soldiers have taken part in include disaster response to Hurricane Katrina, Irma, Maria, and deploying feet-first as part of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. The soldiers posted at Fort Bragg are often the first to be called upon when the need strikes.
Several organizations at Fort Bragg commission challenge coins localized to their units including:
- United States Army Forces Command (FORSCOM,) the nation’s largest U.S. Army command organization with 750,000 Active Army, U.S. Army Reserve, and Army National Guard soldiers.
- The XVIII Airborne Corps, known as “America’s Contingency Troops,” one of the U.S. Army’s best organizations for rapid deployment.
- The 82nd Airborne Division, “All American Division,”serving as the primary fighting arm of the XVIII.
- The 139th Infantry Division, an Army National Guard division serving since World War I.
- The 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, capable of rapidly deploying air defense artillery in operations worldwide.

The families of servicemembers are an endemic part of everyday life at Fort Bragg and the fort hosts a population of roughly 260,000, including military families, contractors, retirees and more. Fort Bragg is a full community, almost operating as a town in of itself with 10 housing communities offering suburban-style townhomes, nine grade schools teaching kids through kindergarten to middle school, and even local chain restaurants such as Popeyes or Starbucks located next to the base commissary.
