Camp Pendleton History
The area that is now Camp Pendleton was first settled by Capt. Gaspar de Portola and his expeditionary team in 1769. The group of Spaniards were looking to establish Franciscan missions up the coast of California and, over the course of 30 years, their efforts produced a total of 21 missionary establishments. The land was blessed under the name Santa Margarita.
By the 1820s, the land was purchased and turned into a cattle ranch under the name Santa Margarita y Las Flores. The ranch changed hands a few times and was incredibly successful for most of its history. It was not until the 1940s that the Marine Corps was able to purchase the land and create the military base of Camp Pendleton. Both the Army and Marine Corps were looking for large portions of land to house training facilities and infantry units. America’s involvement in World War II was an inevitability and President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the expansion once America reached a state of national emergency.
Camp Pendleton quickly became the largest military encampment on the west coast and the land was declared a permanent military base by 1944. The first troops to occupy the base were the 9th Marine Regiment with the 1st Battalion, 12th Marines. The camp specialized in amphibious capabilities and training but eventually expanded its realm of expertise to include infantry, armor, supply, and air power. Today, the camp is the largest expeditionary training base on the west coast.
