A United states military Tradition.
Battalion Challenge Coins
A Personal Means Of Uniting Your Team
It can be intimidating to see the overall scope of the United States Military. As an individual, it is easy to feel lost within the hierarchy. As a new recruit, you find yourself as a single soldier within a platoon. That platoon is apart of several other platoons that make up a company. Then companies make up a battalion, and a group of battalions makes up a brigade. Then it goes up to divisions, and then to divisions within a corps.
A lone soldier may look up the chain and not know where he stands. Battalion challenge coins are used to ground each member of the companies and platoons beneath them with a firm understanding of where they stand, and who they stand for! Military challenge coins are an old tradition within the United States Armed Forces that are used to build camaraderie and well as honor the bravery and sacrifice of those selfless men and women who fight for our country.
In our 15 years of experience, Signature Coins has garnered a unique perspective of the individuals that make up the United States Armed Forces. We take pride in being able to supply many branches of the United States Military with custom challenge coins for full battalions, companies, and even single platoons. We ensure that each of our products does justice in representing the values and accomplishments of the brave service men and women of our country
Military Hierarchy and the Importance of the Battalion
From top to bottom, the hierarchy within the United States Armed Forces looks something like this:
-
Corps
-
Division
-
Brigade
-
Battalion
-
Company
-
Platoon
- Squad
-
Platoon
-
Company
-
Battalion
-
Brigade
-
Division
There are subtitles differences across all branches of the armed forces but, in general, this is a good starting point to understand where you stand in the hierarchy. Starting at the top again, a Corps is the largest denomination, while a squad is the smallest.
-
Corps
- Comprises up to 45,000 soldiers spread across up to 5 Divisions
-
Division
- Usually made up of 3 Brigades and holds somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 soldiers
-
Brigade
- Made up of 2 or 3 Battalions and houses at least 1,500 soldiers
-
Battalion
- A group of up to 6 Companies, usually holding as little as 300 hundred soldiers or as many as 1,000 soldiers
-
Company
- A pairing of 3 to 5 platoons making a group of 60 to 100 soldiers.
-
Platoon
- A group of squads making a total number of up to 44 soldiers
-
Squad
- Typically the smallest team, made up of up to 10 soldiers.
Keeping all of this in mind, what is it that makes a battalion so special?
The scope of the armed forces is massive, and it is easy to feel intimidated or even lost within the giant mass of soldiers. A squad is where soldiers will form their closest bonds with those service men and women they will be working the closest with. But once you move on up the chain, a corps represents your home, but a battalion is your family.
Every member in the armed service is taught the same way and aligned with the same goals, however, the subtle differences that make teams unique offer a much-needed dose of variety within the military machine. While you may all be working together, separate battalions have their own means of building camaraderie, rewarding their members, and achieving their goals.
Battalion challenge coins are means of distinction within the overall hierarchy of the United States Armed Forces. They keep your team bonded closer together, have their own mottos, goals, and standards. Each one competes to be the best, and each one is unique in its own way. Custom battalion challenge coins are carried with pride, displayed with honor, and used as a marker of admittance to a unique group within the corps. They represent your team’s specific values, their achievement, and the small details that set them apart from the rest!

Battalions in the Armed Forces
There is a storied history behind each battalion in the military and each offers a different source for inspired culture. Individual battalions specialize in specific military elements and have grown to pride themselves on what sets them apart from the rest. A couple examples of battalions in the armed forces are:
-
1st Battalion of the 1st Marines
- “The first of the first” is a close combat specialized battalion within the 1st Marine Division.
-
1st Radio Battalion
- Based out of Camp Pendleton in California, this battalion specializes in signal intelligence in the United States Marine Corps
-
Naval Mobile Construction Battalion
- First to coin the nickname “Seabees”, this battalion specializes in naval construction and was incorporated into the military to replace civilian contractors.
Just from this small example set, you can see the difference in specialties. Each battalion has their own nicknames, mottos, objectives, and specialized training making each one unique.
