Army Recruiter Challenge Coins
When a potential recruit walks into a recruitment office, they’ll learn a lot about the army. They’ll learn about basic training. They’ll learn about passing the physical fitness assessment. They’ll learn about education benefit programs like the GI Bill. They’ll learn all of this from their army recruiter, recruiting professionals dedicated to finding competent and brave volunteer soldiers for the U.S. Army. Army recruiters are an irreplaceable part of the organization and a common fixture in the lives of Americans. Beyond their roles as recruiters, these servicemembers establish and build lasting relationships with their local communities by educating the public about army traditions and cultivating proud future soldiers. When meeting a potential soldier, recruiters will teach them about a lot of important steps to becoming a soldier. However, perhaps more important than the base requirements, potential recruits learn about the culture and traditions of what it means to be a soldier. One of those many military traditions a U.S. Army Recruiter may share are the stories behind their military challenge coins.
Challenge coins are a common fixture in every branch of the military from the U.S. Army to the U.S. Marine Corps, and each coin given to a soldier tells a different tale of the recipient’s military service. A potential recruit might see an array of challenge coins lined up on a desk or on a shelf behind their recruiter, but what most don’t realize is every single coin was given to that recruiter for outstanding service during active duty, passing a major career milestone such as officer school, or even meeting officials like the President of the United States.
The Story Behind Each Challenge Coin
Each and every coin a recruiter owns represents a different chapter of their military career. Some may be earned when they’ve reached a major milestone such as graduating from officer academy, while others may be given in recognition of exceptional service or bravery.
There are many potential stories behind each coin behind a recruiters desk:
- Challenge coins can be awarded to servicemembers who earn them by taking part in major military operations. According to Chief Curator Jan Ramirez of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, members of the intelligence team on “Operation Neptune’s Spear” responsible for tracking down Osama Bin Laden were awarded simple challenge coins marked with an “X” after the mission’s success.
- Challenge coins are known as “commander coins” may also be freely given to servicemembers by high-ranking officials such as the President of the United States as direct recognition of their services and tokens of their direct regard. President Barack Obama was notable for being one of the few presidents to be caught on camera giving a “secret handshake” to members of the marine corps in 2014.
- Challenge coins may also be awarded to entire regiments or brigades as “unit coins,” representing the membership and shared solidarity between those groups of soldiers. Official Recruitment Brigades known to share unit coins with their members include:
- U.S. Army 1st Recruiting Brigade, “Team Victory.”
- U.S. Army 2nd Recruiting Brigade, “2nd Rec BDE.”
- U.S. Army 3rd Recruiting Brigade, “Marauders.”
- U.S. Army 5th Recruiting Brigade, “The Alamo Warriors.”
- U.S. Army 6th Recruiting Brigade, “The Outrider Brigade.”
- U.S. Army Medical Recruiting Brigade, “The Highlander Brigade.”
