It’s no secret that Signature Coins offers a wide variety of special customization options for your order of custom coins, but no unique option is more highly requested than the 3D challenge coin option. The differences between 2D and 3D coins can be subtle but distinct, and 3D coins are quickly becoming the most commonly requested challenge coins on the market.

3D Challenge Coins are Quickly Becoming Standard Issue

Our 3D challenge coins are custom coins with one or both sides making use of our 3D customization option. A 2D challenge coin only features one “raised” and one “recessed” level, but a 3D coin makes use of a nearly infinite number of levels. While 2D challenge coins aren’t flat, the difference between the 2D and 3D options can be dramatic.

Raised Surfaces Rise in Popularity

One thing that’s become clear here at Signature Coins over the last few years is that the demand for 3D challenge coins is steadily growing. Since 2017, over 10% of our orders have made use of a 3D mold, and that number continues increasing. The good news is that 3D challenge coins aren’t just being ordered by customers looking to push custom coin design in new directions. Some of the custom 3D designs we’ve created include:

Navy Challenge Coins
Army Challenge Coins
Air Force Challenge Coins
Marine Corps Challenge Coins
Police Challenge Coins
Firefighter Challenge Coins
Corporate Challenge Coins

This is just the tip of the iceberg of companies, units, military branches and law enforcement agencies making use of 3D molds. As more and more customers seek to set their coin designs apart from the rest, 3D challenge coins continue to be the preferred method for accomplishing that.

Factors to Consider When Designing a 3D Challenge Coin

3D coins allow a greater amount of detail in certain designs. With multiple layers available, different shapes, physical textures and visual details stand out more clearly than they can on a 2D coin design. And with the 3D option, certain design elements such as landscapes can be produced with a higher level of fidelity to the original.

What you gain in these 3D designs, however, can sometimes be lost in color options available in your coin design. And considering the increased amount of materials that go into the creation of these custom challenge coins, the cost is also slightly increased. But what you get in return for that slightly increased cost is more than worth it as your custom coin will be able to stand out even more from the crowd.

Another consideration to keep in mind is that these coins will sometimes take a little more time to create than 2D challenge coins. 3D coins require a more elaborate mold, which can take longer to create and more time to perfect before coins go into full production. While many of the 3D challenge coins we help design go over our normal production window of 14 days or fewer, the slightly longer wait gives you a set of coins with an unrivaled amount of depth and detail.

Since the year 2000, our Signature Coins team has been developing custom coin designs for clients all over the world. In that time, we’ve been able to streamline the design process, and have even created a challenge coin design template that our customers can use to keep their ideas organized and ensure we can give you exactly what you want out of your perfect custom coin. Place an order with us today and see for yourself why 3D coins have become such a popular option with our customers.

3D Challenge Coin FAQs

Traditional challenge coins are round, and they feature custom artwork of a team’s emblem, mottos, important locations, and the dates of special events.

The difference is that 2D challenge coins have two levels of metal, the raised and recessed areas (striked and non-striked).

While traditional 2D challenge coins offer plenty of room for intricate artwork, a 3D Challenge Coin allows for realistic detail. 3D coins have an unlimited number of levels which means we can round edges and create smooth gradations between the raised and recessed areas on 3D challenge coins.

Both 2D and 3D coins have physical characteristics that change the look, feel and weight of your coin. Neither options are necessarily better than the other and both are effective for creating different designs. Ultimately, deciding which is best for you is an important part of the initial design process.

Our minimum for custom molded coins is 50 per design. Per-coin pricing improves at every quantity tier above that — compare them on our challenge coin pricing page.

If you need fewer than 50, our no-minimum custom coin builder lets you order as few as one coin, and stock and personalized coins have no minimum either. We can also produce a 5-coin pre-production sample against a larger order, though it isn’t cost-effective on its own.

Through years of experience, we’ve been able to streamline our process and deliver a superior product faster than any other company.

After the custom coin design (Proof) is approved and ordered, the project goes directly into production, and depending on the design, it can take around 2-5 weeks to manufacture the products!

For instance, a non-colored antique design with no upgrade features, could take us only 3 weeks to produce! If you have a special design, the process will take a few days longer.

We store all coin molds at our production facility for two years after an order is placed. Due to limited storage space, if the coin molds expire, we recycle the materials to use for new projects. If a reorder is placed while the mold is on file, there is no mold fee and the 2-year storage term begins again!
