COVID-19: The Unlikely Inspiration for Custom Challenge Coins
Right now, the effects of COVID-19 are being felt all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of people are working from home or out of work because of how far the virus has spread.
Our business has been impacted significantly by slower traffic, but we’re working hard to keep all of our employees busy and still servicing the remaining customers.
A new phenomenon in recent weeks has been Coronavirus-themed challenge coins. Why?
With so much of the world shut down, it’s easy to forget the first responders, hospital workers, and men and women performing other vital roles are still working around the clock to protect our communities and our country.
We’ve made challenge coins for similar purposes in the past. For example, in the wake of hurricanes and earthquakes, people come to us looking for natural disaster coins that celebrate and commemorate first responders and volunteers who provided aid and relief where it was needed most.
The reason that people order challenge coins at times like these is because the coins boost morale.
If you’re wondering how challenge coins boost morale, the answer is really quite simple. They add levity to an otherwise bleak situation, they recognize the sacrifices and accomplishments of the people saving lives during a crisis, and they cultivate teamwork by reminding everyone that we are in this together.
With our fundraiser, we created an inexpensive and easy way for our customers to recognize the heroes in their own community.

Coronavirus Challenge Coins Designed to Boost Morale and Keep People On Task
As is the case with natural disasters like hurricanes, floods and tornadoes, the COVID-19 outbreak has required the cooperation and coordination of teams from every field imaginable.
Sometimes, disaster challenge coins are created in honor of the partnerships that make it possible to respond to a crisis and rebuild. The Air Medical Evacuation Team that will receive this coin had to coordinate with The U.S. Public Health Service, the U.S. Trauma Critical Care Team, NDMS and DMAT in their response to COVID-19, and that was only the beginning.
These coins are a celebration of the teamwork required to carry out a successful response to COVID-19. They honor the people still working on the ground, showing appreciation for their efforts and reminding them that together, the team will succeed.
The Coronavirus challenge coins we’ve worked on are also used to recognize the sacrifices being made by the first responders, hospital workers and military professionals who are still hard at work protecting our country and our community.
This design was created for soldiers working in Afghanistan. Specifically, these coins are going to a newly formed unit that was created in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak. The design was inspired by Jack Daniel’s whiskey bottles, and the NATO star at the center of the label has the year 2020 in honor of the unit’s inaugural year. If you look closely, you’ll see Coronavirus cells floating in the whiskey.
Motivating First Responders with a Light-Hearted Coin Design
The outbreak of coronavirus is no laughing matter. The response teams and task forces that are working hard to stop the spread of the virus and provide for the people who have been affected both physically and economically have an important and arduous mission.
However, it’s still important to help relieve stress and ensure that your team is not burned out. That’s why several of the COVID-19 challenge coins that we’ve designed show off a team’s unique sense of humor.
Both of these coins include green glow enamel to give the coins an eerie appearance once the lights go out. Other than that, these coins take very different approaches to the artwork.
Challenge coins are very personal by nature, and artwork usually includes inside jokes and references that are hard to understand if you are not part of the team. However, since COVID-19 has spread so far and affected so many, it’s easy for anyone to get a laugh or two from custom coin designs like these.
